POSITION CLASS DEFINITION:

Essential nature of work; degree of difficulty and responsibility.

This position involves responsibility for performing specialized work in the setup and support of Windows workstations, mobile devices, client and server software, telecommunications, and network equipment. Expertise is required in installing, customizing, and maintaining vendor-supplied operating systems and application software. Administers programs and files containing confidential information on the network. General supervision is received from a technology administrator and/or a business administrator. Supervision is not a function of this position.  Performs related work as required.

 

PRIMARY WORK ACTIVITIES:

Typical activities characteristic of the class.

  • Provides end-user support through departmental standards and procedures.
  • Installs and maintains, as well as generates documentation for infrastructure cabling.
  • Maintains personal computer equipment owned by the school district including laptops, mobile devices, printers and other related equipment.
  • May administer programs and files containing confidential information on the network.
  • May administer user accounts on multiple networks.
  • May administer (setup and configure) networked printers and print servers.
  • Installs, customizes, and maintains vendor-supplied software for LAN and stand-alone computer workstation operation, and supports communications software (e.g. E-mail, Web Browsers).
  • Performs hardware and software evaluations and provides management with reports and recommendations.
  • Performs help desk activities including answering calls, generating documentation for requests, and responding with technical support to requests.
  • Provides technical assistance and/or training to instructors or staff members for use of related equipment and software.
  • May maintain documentation of repairs to equipment being serviced.
  • May provide procedural documentation for support activities to accommodate future technical reference.
  • May troubleshoot and repair devices and software utilizing onsite and offsite support resources.
  • May administer E-mail equipment including setting up and customizing user accounts.
  • May coordinate onsite equipment repairs and warranty repair work.
  • Provides needs assessment analysis, support, and implementation of computer applications, as well as local area network (LAN) operating systems; monitors and adjusts LAN systems and stand-alone computer workstations for optimal performance.
  • May prepare charts, tables, and diagrams to assist in analyzing problems.
  • Provides full documentation on technical support activities including time management.
  • Maintains records for hardware and software inventory.
  • May travel to various sites as necessary to perform related duties.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Superintendent of Schools.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF:   143.  principles, techniques, and concepts of microcomputer programming; 194.  use and operation of microcomputers, including management of local area networks; 6.  application of various types of microcomputer equipment to accounting, statistical, and database management problems; 108.  office terminology, practices, and procedures; 43.  design of current microcomputer systems; 186.  systems analysis applicable to microcomputer programming; 167.6 the repair and maintenance of personal computers and related equipment;

ABILITY TO: 102.  make minor repairs to microcomputer equipment; 78.  install and use purchased software; 4.  advise and train others in microcomputer operation and software applications; 157.5 prepare written program and operation documentation; 115.  operate a personal computer and Local Area Network;  179.3 service personal computers; 125.4 perform equipment adjustment/repair requiring good manual dexterity.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, specialized background, training and experience.

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and six (6) months of experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of personal computers in a network environment, including server setup and maintenance; OR
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an associate’s degree in computer science or related field and two and a half (2.5) years of the  experience described in “A” above; OR
  3. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an associate’s degree in computer science or related field and completion of two (2) certificate courses in technical computer repair, computer networking or server support from a recognized technical business or training school and six (6) months of the experience described in “A” above; OR
  4. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma including or supplemented by computer/network training and four and a half (4.5) years of the experience described in “A” above; OR
  5. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of “A,” “B,” “C,” and “D” above.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Full-time, probationary appointment
  • 12-month position
  • $60,990.00 per year (2025-2026 school year)
  • Benefits as per CSEA contract
