POSITION TITLE: Automotive Mechanic Helper
LOCATION: Bus Garage
CLASSIFICATION: Civil Service - Non-Competitive
START DATE: As Soon As Possible
PRIMARY WORK ACTIVITIES:
Typical activities characteristic of the class.
- Checks tires and repairs flats
- Changes oil and lubricates automotive equipment
- Assists mechanic in the grinding of valves and fitting of bearings, pistons and rings
- Assists in the repairing and overhauling of brake systems, differentials, transmissions and front and rear axles
- Helps adjust steering mechanisms and align wheels
- Working under the supervision of mechanics
- May operate a school bus on an assigned route
- Performs a variety of related tasks
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, specialized background, training and experience.
- Minimum “CDL B” license with “PS” endorsement and air brakes
- Must meet all DMV requirements for School Bus Driver
- Must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education
- Operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions
- Follow simple oral and written directions
- Mental alertness and dependability
- Possess basic skills required to deal with behavior management
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Part-time, 12-month position
- Probationary appointment
- $24.37 per hour
- Benefits per CSEA contract
- Hours of work: 2 hours per day during school year, 8 hours per day during school breaks
- Hours may vary per supervisor’s discretion to meet district needs
